One other cause of alteration was time itself : most of the woods used for the marquetries of the desk were dyed in natural and chemical solutions in order to created woods with impossible colours such as green, blue, purple yellow and bright red.

Both the French revolution and the degradations of time considerably altered the King’s desk.ĭuring the revolution all monarchical symbols were removed and replaced with more neutral ones this includes the cypher of King Louis XV on each of the sides replaced with blue porcelain, the central marquetries featuring monarchical attributes replaced with the attributes of sciences and ultimately the medallion in the back with the bust of King Louis XV in its centre replaced with the figure of Minerva.
